Review: Paper Trail (PC)

Did you ever just stumble upon something so different, it kinda makes your brain itch? Not in a bad way, but more in a “Wow, I didn’t even know this was missing from my life” way. Enter Paper Trail (and not to be confused with the endless bureaucracy that comes with taxes). This game’s not like anything else I’ve seen. But, like, seriously, it defies that usual comparison game we all play. You know, when someone says, “Oh, it’s like [insert another game here],” and you’re rolling your eyes because you’ve already decided if it’s your cup of tea or not. We’re all guilty, let’s admit it. This time, though, I felt genuinely puzzled (pun totally intended) when someone asked me what it’s like as I couldn’t really pin it down.

First thing’s first, Paper Trail ain’t your everyday puzzle game. The way it plays with level design is like, imagine origami on steroids. Your task here is bending, twisting, and flipping the world (yep, you get to fold levels) to reveal pathways and sort out hidden gems. It’s kinda like connecting dots you didn’t even know existed before you did a bunch of folding around like a clumsy wizard. And the artistic side of the game? It looks like pages out of some really posh coloring book that no one would dare color in because it’s a work of art already. Honestly, playing it feels a bit like stepping into a moving painting with a story attached.

So who do you play as? Just a girl, doing that classic running away from home gig. You’d think there’s some epic battle or villain behind her getaway, but nope. It’s just parents being their usual overbearing selves, thinking they have this whole “protective” thing down to an art. Which, heads up, they don’t. I won’t spill more about what happens, ’cause you need a reason to play, right? But the writing is, well, whimsically delightful? Can I say that? Yes, I just did.

Where was I… Oh right, the mysteries within the folding—seriously, they don’t make it easy breezy. You’ll need to contort those pages in all sorts of ways more times than you wish to admit. It’s not like you can carelessly flap a piece and hope it works. You gotta mind where your virtual self is standing or you’ve negated the whole magic trick. Trust me, when you’ve solved one and found that juicy little secret on the level’s flip side, it’s like striking gold in your backyard. But by that logic, it won’t be too easy. Collecting all those hidden treasures? No idea how long that might take you, but consider yourself warned.

Now here, let’s keep it real. Paper Trail doesn’t have bucketloads to unpack. But it cleverly marries the moving parts—story and mechanics—in such harmony they could win a figure skating championship (in my opinion). Strip away the folding element, and you leave behind just the skeleton of an adventure, but turn away and you miss out on something soulfully exciting. I’m usually one to bite back at a game that leans too hard on a single trick up its sleeve, but this one gets away with it. Everything just chants together rather than stepping awkwardly on each other’s toes.

So the verdict. Challenging? For sure. Frustrating at times? Yup. But never enough to have you rage quitting out the window. Puzzles are logical, no weird left-field solutions. Deep breaths and some trial-error will save ya. It’s a celebration when you conquer one. Feels good, man. And yup, your neck might cramp from the head-scratching but hey, that’s puzzle life for ya.

In sum, Paper Trail, a refreshing little enigma—one reel ’em in those who dance to the beat of brain-twisters. Sure, might not tug everyone’s heartstrings, but sure does scratch that itch for something different in a familiar genre. Don’t sleep on it if you’re down for a creative jog.
