So, okay, Google’s like flirting with the idea of dropping some new smart glasses at their big Google I/O shindig next week. And it could be their way of fist-bumping Ray-Ban’s Meta glasses. Yeah, I know. We’re all like, “What, another gadget?”
They even tossed some hints in a promo. The Android boss, Sameer Samat, was rocking a pair. He didn’t spill the beans directly, but he did tease that attendees might catch “a few more really cool Android demos.” Typical, right? It’s like dangling a treat just out of reach.
So, being the detectives we are—or maybe just nosy—all it took was one YouTube screenshot. Bam! Those glasses screamed Ray-Ban Wayfarer vibes, with a little camera chilling on the left temple. Why does this always make me think of spy movies?
Oh, and there’s this LED spot above the camera. Probably like a “Smile, you’re on camera!” alert. No sneaky selfies here. It’s probably Google’s way of matching what the Ray-Bans can do.
The arms of these glasses look kinda beefy. I’d bet my last coffee they’re stashing batteries and processors in there. Maybe even something from their new Android XR platform Samat hinted at. Oh, and right near his ear, there’s this tiny slit. Speaker or button? Could be either. I’m going with speaker ‘cause—why not?
Not to stir another pot, but Apple’s also in on the smart glasses game. Rumor has it they’re cooking up a custom chip for their version. Because, naturally, it’s Apple.
We’ll get more juicy details at Google I/O from May 20-21. Livestreams, sessions, the whole shebang. Maybe they’ll actually drop a mention of Android XR. And there are those two talks lined up just for that. Fingers crossed we get something concrete this time.
And yeah, if you’re keen on more geeky goodness, catch the keynote live on YouTube. May 20th, a chill 10 AM PT. Why am I even sharing this? Probably because I’m a sucker for tech mysteries.
