Alright, so here’s the deal. Warner Bros and NetherRealm Studios just slapped down the Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition. It’s the whole shebang — every DLC character, some new movie skins, and who even knows what else. But, man, some folks are NOT happy about this. It’s like, right on the heels of some rough Warner Bros financial news, too. Coincidence? Maybe. Or not. Who knows.
Anyway, this “Definitive Edition” — which sounds kinda like the game’s last hurrah — drops like two years after its big debut in 2023. Definitive, of course, means the end of the line. Funny enough, Mortal Kombat 1’s moved over 5 million copies, zipping up those console download charts like it’s on double espresso, as Ed Boon (MK’s co-creator, in case you didn’t know) likes to remind us. Sounds pretty rad, right? But, as with everything, there’s more than meets the eye.
So here’s a bit of a plot twist. Mortal Kombat X crushed it with over 12 million sales, and then Mortal Kombat 11 high-kicked its way to a staggering 15 million! And now, next to those, MK1’s sales feel like the kid in the hand-me-down shoes.
Oh, and speaking of Warner Bros, they’re not exactly throwing a party. Their Q1 2025 report shows a whopping 48% revenue slide in gaming, blaming last year’s underwhelming Suicide Squad game, and the previous year’s Hogwarts Legacy and MK1 leftovers. Ouch.
Fans are kind of bummed — big time. They thought Mortal Kombat 1 would be kicking around a bit longer. Ed Boon went on Twitter last September and was all about sticking with MK1 for the long haul. But hey, if Warner Bros says, “Move on,” then what can you do? You gotta wonder how much time NetherRealm’s really had for whatever’s next on their development list.
Honestly, it stinks for MK fans, right? Here’s a solid game, doing its thing, but now the whole DLC tap might get shut off, which just crimps its competitive style. It’s probably gonna drift into the background, with everyone waiting for the next Mortal Kombat or Injustice or whatever freaky fighting game comes next.
Still, maybe — and this is me spitballing here — they keep shelling out DLC, despite the whole “definitive” schtick. It’d be wild, right? But stranger things have happened. So yeah, send some good vibes to the NetherRealm crew, and let’s hear what you’d love to see from their next moves!
