Oh boy, Sega’s finally dishing out some Virtua Fighter scoop. Or are they? I mean, they said something’s cooking for May 11—last day of Evo Japan, by the way. Supposedly on their Virtua Fighter YouTube channels. Assuming those even exist yet, ha.
Anyway, Sega’s mentioning “new developments” for the series. Whatever that means. Their post vanished from social media. Probably because those YouTube links got stage fright and the timing was anyone’s guess.
Could this be about Virtua Fighter 6? Or maybe another Virtua Fighter 5 running on, like, a smart fridge. Because everything’s trying to be an Xbox these days, right? Sega’s keeping mum, so who even knows if this direct is a big reveal or just, I don’t know, noise.
Polygon hit up Sega for some clarity on the VF Direct 2025 event. Sega’s rep, being all mysterious, confirmed the show’s still a go. Said they’d pop a new post up later (wonder if this one sticks?).
Stay tuned, they say. We’ll update when Sega spills the beans on scheduling.
Backtrack to 1993. Virtua Fighter rocked the boat—unexpectedly swept a young gaming world off its feet. First real-deal 3D fighter out there. Sega’s brainchild basically laid out the red carpet for future 3D fighting games.
Virtua Fighter flipped the play style script too. Influenced heavy-hitters like Tekken. Plus inspired some rather forgotten gems (or flops?) like Fight For Life. Fighter’s Destiny, which was surprisingly… epic.
Fast forward to 2006, Virtua Fighter 5 hit the scene. Kicked off on the arcade system before hitting PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Sega’s been tweaking it ever since—up till now with Virtua Fighter 5 REVO on Steam and next-gen consoles (still no fridge version yet).
Last we saw of VF6? Video Game Awards 2024 teaser. New artistic flair, characters had a bit of a makeover. Akira, looking especially fly. Can’t unsee that.
So what’s next for Virtua Fighter? Sega’s being cagey… guess we’ll just, you know, wait and see.
