I stumbled upon this thing about Nintendo’s new Switch 2. Jeez, the screen has room for… a lot of love, let’s say. Some Chinese reviewer, Chimolog—no clue who that is, by the way—said the display’s average response time is a sluggish 17.06 ms. Now, I have to admit, I’m not sure how they even came to this number. No details about how it was tested, so maybe take this with a grain of salt. Or a whole shaker.
Anyway, this Switch 2 is boasting a 1080p, 120 Hz, 7.9-inch LCD shebang. But somehow, its screen response teeters between 8.88 ms and a snaily 27.46 ms. That 17 ms average? Makes you wonder if pixels and turtles were in a race—I’m betting on the turtle.
Chimolog compared it to other monitors too, if you can believe it—like the 60 Hz and 75 Hz ones—and surprise, surprise, the Switch 2 is way behind. The closest on their list was the Innocn M2U Mini-LED thing with a 11.06 ms response time. So yeah, talk about putting Nintendo in the slow lane.
Apparently, Nintendo focused on other screen aspects—contrast ratios, brightness, all that jazz. The thing boasts some impressive stats: 1309:1 contrast ratio, lights up to 303 cd/m², covers all sorts of color gamuts! And apparently, it’s rocking an IPS display. Color me impressed. Sort of.
Oh, and there’s this funky text readability issue. They say the RGB layout is “special,” which sounds like a fancy way to say “not so great.” Supposedly looks blurry, kinda like some OLED panels. Fun times.
Now, they didn’t—or couldn’t—test this display at 120 Hz. Guess response times might drop when it’s cranked up? No idea. But hey, even if it did, it won’t magically become some speed demon.
Here’s the kicker though: this display is apparently the worst around. Even the original Switch was snappier. But it’s flying off the shelves! It sold 3.5 million units in four days. World’s gone mad, right? Gamers will put up with the screen’s snail pace ’cause it’s the only way to get their Nintendo fix. Here’s hoping an OLED version swoops in soon to save the day. Fingers crossed!
