Oh boy, here we go! So, you know how everyone’s out there trying to recreate Valve’s iconic Counter-Strike in VR? Yeah, well, soon you can just play the actual thing on Quest and Pico headsets. No joke, this is thanks to these wild folks at Team Beef. They’ve been dragging old games into the future, into VRland—or whatever you wanna call it—for ages. Like they’ve done Tomb Raider, Duke Nukem 3D, Prey, Quake 4… the list goes on. I honestly can’t keep track.
Now they’re diving into Counter-Strike 1.6. Yes, the beloved godfather of all tactical shooters born from the Half-Life mod era. Originally on Steam way back in the 2000s. Man, those were the days, right? Anyway—wait, no—Team Beef’s bringing this classic to the Quest and Pico 4 as a standalone VR experience. How exactly? Using the latest version of Xash3D FWGS. Try saying that three times fast. It makes things work with the old GoldSrc engine, which, if you’re like me and spend too much time on useless trivia, you’d know as the Half-Life Engine. Yeah, I practically live on fun facts like that.
Team Beef’s also throwing in cross-play functionality—woohoo! And supposedly, you can create servers right in VR. Like, hit a button, and boom! New world. Or something like that. They also plan to give us full 6DoF motion controls. Whatever that technical jargon boils down to, it sounds fancy and probably means you’ll feel like you’re actually dodging bullets and not just waving your hands around like an air traffic controller.
For those itching to try it, here’s the kicker: it’s coming “very soon” in an early access alpha for their Patreon backers. But don’t get too excited yet—the teaser they dropped shows an early prototype that doesn’t have the 6DoF motion controls just yet. Patience is a virtue or whatever they say.
Can’t wait to see how this rolls out. Who knew nostalgia and virtual reality would collide this way? But hey, maybe I’m just sentimental—or easily impressed. Both, probably.
